Ep 005 of The 300s Podcast Has Arrived!

Episode 005 of The 300s Podcast is straight fire flames. We talk the early mayhem that is NFL Free Agency, Jimmy G on the trading block, Bruins surging after canning Claude Julien, the Celtics making zero moves at the trade deadline, Red Sox Spring Training and why the World Baseball Classic is a disaster.

Gold Jacket, Green Jacket, Who Gives a Shit?

The ’90s was a great decade, definitely the best of the four decades I’ve lived in. A booming economy, the rise of the world wide web, no major wars and Bubba holding things down in the White House. The ’90s also had more than its fair share of great television and movies. Happy Gilmore was a classic in its time the way Citizen Kane and Casablanca were in the early ’40s. They are great products of their respective times.

Happy Gilmore is also, arguably, the best Adam Sandler film. It is the one film I can quote endlessly with friends, and have them respond in turn with another classic Chubbs Peterson quip.

A lot of ’90s nostalgia can get me feeling pretty old, but I don’t feel as bad when I realize that this movie came out before I hit 10. Looking back on Happy Gilmore 21 years later, here are three quick takeaways.

  1. Julie Bowen (Virginia Venit) looks better today than she did in 1996.fdvumz9
  2. Bob Barker may be the World’s Greatest Master of Ceremonies, but his fight scene in Happy Gilmore brought him adulation from a whole new demographic. It’s hard to imagine all those college students in the audience at The Price is Right in the late ’90s without him kicking Adam Sandler’s ass first.giphy
  3. One more thought on the fight scene. When commissioner Doug Thompson suspends Happy from the tour for getting into a fight with a game show host on national television, what was his archrival Shooter McGavin doing in that meeting?cqaidwpusaainrb

I could go on and on, but you should just pay tribute and watch this classic tonight. It’s the only movie I have on DVD AND VHS. So grab a footlong cold cut combo and settle in for this 92-minute time capsule from the great decade of the 1990’s.

B’s Look Good Heading Into Bye Week

ESPN – The NHL will work in a five-day “bye week” next season as part of the negotiation with the NHL Players’ Association to sign off on the All-Star format changes announced this week, according to sources…

[T]he league will build in a five-day bye week for each team into their schedule between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28 next season, sources told ESPN.com.

Players will be completely off with no practice during this break. There will be practice permitted after 4 p.m. local time on the fifth day if there is a game on the sixth day; otherwise no practice will be allowed on the fifth day.

I won’t lie, I had no idea NHL teams had bye weeks until I heard it mentioned on the pre-game show last night. A quick Google search revealed that the NHL bye week is, in fact, new for the 2016-2017 season. A complete list of NHL bye weeks can be found on reddit.

With their 4-0 win over the Canadiens last night, the Bruins head into their inaugural bye week winners of three in a row, 3-0-0 in the Bruce Cassidy era. The Canadiens also have their bye this week after back-to-back losses over the weekend.

The Bruins got skewered for firing Claude the day of the Patriots parade and rightfully so. But maybe the timing of Claude’s firing wasn’t so bad after all. The Bruins have strung together three straight wins, and now have six full days off before opening a west coast road trip in San Jose Sunday night. They will play four games in California and Texas in eight days before returning to the Garden on February 28.

In the past, I always expected the Bruins to fire a coach after a disastrous west coast road trip when it was probably too late anyways. At least this year the Bruins made the move before it was too late. We’ll have a better idea in two weeks if it really made a difference, and if the Bruce Cassidy era will extend into May, June or beyond.

Bruins in Free Fall; Reportedly Discussing Trading Rookie Defenseman Brandon Carlo

bruins-dumpster-fire-358x356

CSNNE – “The entire Bruins management group should be fired on the spot if they trade a 20-year-old, top pairing shutdown defenseman on an entry level contract like [Brandon] Carlo unless they are getting a bona fide superstar in return…[Gabriel] Landeskog is not a bona fide superstar. He’s a good player that’s topped out at 26 goals and 65 points in the NHL…If the price were right for Landeskog it would make all the sense in the world for the Bruins to deal him, but it’s a giant honking red flag that Colorado is looking to unload a player like him that’s signed for a reasonable $5.5 million price tag over the next four seasons. Teams don’t trade young players like that with term unless there’s more to the story, and that’s something the Bruins would do well to consider before giving up a player that could be a top-4 shutdown defenseman in Boston for the next 10 years.

It’s that time of year again; the annual Bruins make a panic trade and move key assets just to maybe try and get the No. 8 seed. They’ve done it the last two years, trading away prospects and draft picks for guys like John Michael Lyles. I mean to be fair the Bruins haven’t traded away a really good young player in like 3 years.

Coming into the year, the Bruins defense core was supposed to be a disaster and would ultimately be what sank the team. Except Chara has played very well (and stayed healthy), Krug’s been solid, even McQuaid has made an impact this year with his physicality (when the linesmen aren’t holding his arms down). But, the emergence of Brandon Carlo as a top pairing defenseman has been the lone bright spot to this so far shitty season. Guy is a 20 year old rookie who has been playing like a future centerpiece.

Now if the rumors from Bleacher Report are true, then the Bruins are looking to make a deal for Colorado’s winger Gabriel Landeskog. Landeskog is 24, was a former No. 2 overall pick and has four 20 goal seasons. So why are the Avalanche looking to get rid of him?

Sounds like a pretty good player to get back, but I’m skeptical. I’m with Haggs on this one; red flag city. This team is a dumpster fire that is probably going to miss the playoffs again. I don’t want to see the Bruins burn the prime of guys like Bergeron, Rask and Marchand, but I also don’t want to see young guys getting dealt in panic moves just to get the No. 8 seed.

Or who knows, maybe this is our version of the Dallas Tyler Seguin trade. Maybe we’re getting a steal because the other team is run by morons for a change.

Episode 001 of The 300s Podcast Coming In Hot!

This is it. The start of the 300s media empire. Unless you’d rather listen to guys scream at each other on the radio about why Drew Pomeranz should be coming outta the bullpen. This is a podcast from real fans who talk the way you do; no hyped up hot takes or mock outrage. Just shooting the shit. In the very first episode of The 300s Podcast we talk about how Los Angeles has too many football teams, NFL coaches getting fired/hired, the Red Sox rotation vs the Mets, how the Islanders ended up with a bastard dragon as their mascot and is it possible to buy season tickets without having a panic attack? Bruins Waive Anton Khudobin, Could Really Use a Young Goalie Prospect

the300santonkhudobin

The Bruins just waived backup goalie Anton Khudobin, who had some decent success in his last go round with the B’s in 2012-13, but the guy’s numbers have been awful this year at 1-5-1 with an .885 save percentage. That just ain’t gonna get it done in the NHL these days.

It got to the point that every time Tuukka Rask wasn’t playing, it was a goddamn adventure out there. For all the crap people gave Tuukka last year for not “carrying” the Bruins, thats exactly what he’s doing this year. When he’s in net the B’s have a shot against most teams. When he’s not? Circus adventure. Zane McIntyre seems to be the next man up from Providence, who has been crushing it in down in the AHL, but had a rough go his last time up to Boston (10 goals on 71 shots for .859 save percentage).

It’s too bad the Bruins don’t have a goalie in waiting that they used a 1st round draft pick on a few years back….that’d be awesome to have a guy like that.

How Disrespectful is it for the Bruins to Try and Sell Me Celtics Playoff Gear?

celtics_superstar

Just got this email in my inbox and I had to do a double take…

Screenshot 2016-04-15 at 1.06.36 PM

I know the Bruins and the Celtics operate in the same building, but after the embarrassment of choking away another playoff berth, the Bruins should not be in the business of hawking playoff gear for another team. The only time the word “playoffs” should be coming out of their mouths is when talking about what changes will be made to make sure they get there next year. Not being a pop-up shop for the Celtics to sell t-shirts.

PS – Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love the way the Celtics play all out, all-for-one type ball, but that One Superstar t-shirt was asking for it.
