First Pick: Devonte’ Graham O15.5 pts vs IND (-118)

Fact #1: Graham has eclipsed 16 points in four of his last five games.

Fact #1: Hunter has eclipsed 17 points in three straight.

Fact #2: The Wizards are allowing 26.5 PPG to the small forward position over their last seven games.

Fact #3: The Wizards are allowing 28.1 PPG to the point guard position over their last seven.

Fact #1: The Bucks (31.5) and Pelicans (29.8) are 1st and 6th, respectively in first quarter point averages this season.

Sixth Pick: Jrue Holiday O16.5 pts vs NOP (-103)

Logic: Holiday is coming off his worst shooting performance of the season against Toronto (2-14), but tonight is his first regular season return to New Orleans, who traded him this past off-season. I’m here for the revenge game narrative.

Seventh Pick: Marvin Bagley III O13.5 pts vs TOR (-110)

Fact #1: The Raptors are allowing 23 PPG to the PF position over their last seven games.

Fact #2: Bagley has eclipsed 14 points in three of his last five and put up 15 against the Raptors in their first meeting back on the 8th.

Eighth Pick: James Harden O27.5 pts vs OKC (-106)

Fact #1: You have to remind your past that you’re better since you left them.

Fact #2: Durant is out tonight.

Fact #3: Harden has 28+ in three of his seven games since joining Brooklyn.

1.27.21 Hoop Tales: What’s your Favorite Scary (Terry) Movie Edition?

Terry Rozier at the forefront of Hornets' youth movement - The Boston Globe

Last Thursday: 4-3 (+.52 units)

Season: 27-33 (-9.93 units)

Recap: Last Thursday looked oh, so promising until Malcolm Brogdon decided to hit his over as the game-winning 3-pter in OT against the Magic.

First Pick: Terry Rozier O17.5 pts vs IND (-120)

Fact #1: The Pacers are allowing an average of 25 PPG to the two-guard position over their last seven games.

Fact #2: Rozier has eclipsed 18 pts in four of his last six.

Second Pick: Jerami Grant O23.5 pts vs CLE (-110)

Fact #1: Grant went for 28 the first time these teams played and has eclipsed 24 pts in four of his last six.

Fact #2: The Cavs are allowing 28.5 PPG to the small forward position — the 2nd-most by any team — over their last seven games.

Third Pick: Evan Fournier O17.5 pts vs SAC (-134)

Fact #1: Fournier has eclipsed 18 points in all four games since returning from injury.

Fact #2: The Kings are allowing 27 PPG to the two-guard position over their last seven contests.

Obligatory homer picks incoming…

Fourth Pick: Kyrie Irving O24.5 pts vs ATL (-118)

Fact #1: Irving has hit this number in three of four games since Harden’s arrival

Fact #2: The Hawks allow an average of 25 PPG to the PG position over their last seven.

Fifth Pick: James Harden O9.5 assists vs ATL (+107)

Fact #1: Harden has recorded double-digit assists in five of six games since joining Brooklyn and this game should be very high-paced as the previous two matchups were.

Sixth Pick: Nets -5.5 vs ATL (-110)

Fact #1: The Nets are catching the Hawks in their third-game-in-four-nights and they struggled to get past a Kawhi and PG13-less Clippers team last night.

Seventh Pick: Bucks -2.5 1st quarter vs TOR (-108)

Fact #1: The Bucks are an NBA-best 12-4 against the 1st quarter spread this season. Yes, Toronto is 11-6, but they will be with OG Anunoby, while Siakam is a game-time decision.

1.22.21 Hoop Tales: You’re on the Mark-kanen, Lauri Edition

Lauri Markkanen Close to Returning - On Tap Sports Net

Wednesday: 1-4 (-3.25 units)

Season: 23-30 (-10.46 units)

Recap: Friendly reminder to you all + self: make sure to see if the player you pick is starting before selecting him for two props (i.e. Joe Harris).

First Pick: Lauri Markkanen O17.5 pts vs CHA (-125)

Fact #1: Markkanen has eclipsed 18+ points in two straight.

Fact #2: The Hornets are allowing an average of 24 PPG to the SF position over their last seven games.

Second Pick: Bulls 1st Quarter ML vs CHA (+105)

Fact #1: Due to a postponed game against Washington on Wednesday, the Hornets have had the past five days off, so I’d expect the tiniest bit of rust to be shaken off through the first 12 minutes.

Fact #2: The Bulls are 9-5 ATS in the 1st quarter this season.

Third and Fourth Picks: Mason Plumlee O8.5 pts (-110) and O7.5 rbs (-122) vs HOU

Fact #1: Christian Wood is out tonight. For you “casuals” out there like Shaq, that means there are a lot of rebounds up for grabs tonight.

Fact #2: With PJ Tucker playing the 5, I have to imagine he draws Plumlee and Blake is matched with Boogie Cousins on both sides. That’s a 5-6 inch advantage for Plums.

Fact #3: Plumlee has eclipsed 9+ points in three straight and has 8+ boards in three of his last five.

Fifth Pick: Malcolm Brogdon U22.5 pts vs ORL (+105)

Fact #1: Brogdon has yet to string together consecutive games over 23 points — that’s literally the logic behind this pick.

Sixth Pick: Kyrie Irving O26.5 pts vs CLE (-117)

Fact #1: Collin Sexton got the best of Irving, so it’s only fair for Kyrie to return the favor. Irving returned with 37 points on Wednesday and no Durant should mean he could get at least 30 this season.

Seventh Pick: James Harden O28.5 pts vs CLE (-110)

Fact #1: Harden’s point totals in three games with BRK are 32, 34 and 21. The 21 came with Durant on the floor. With him out tonight, that’s a lot of shots for him and Kyrie to have in their quest for 30 each.

1.9.21 Hoop Tales: Dear John (Collins) Edition

John Collins' return won't save the Hawks this season -- because they don't need saving - CBSSports.com

Friday: 2-2 (-0.32 units)

Season: 17-23 (-8.47 units)

First Pick: John Collins O19.5 pts vs CHA (-121)

Fact #1: Collins has 20+ in three of his last five, including 23 against these same Hornets on Wednesday.

Fact #2: Hornets allow a league-high 28 PPG to the PF position over their last seven games.

Second Pick: Domantas Sabonis O19.5 pts vs PHX (-110)

Fact #1: The Suns are allowing an average of 24 PPG to the PF position over the last seven.

Fact #2: Sabonis has 20+ points in two of his last four.

Third Pick: Duncan Robinson O12.5 pts vs WAS (-105)

Fact #1: The Wizards can’t guard a parked car according to Bradley Beal.

Fact #2: The Wiz have allowed an average of 25 PPG to the two-guard position over their last seven.

1.8.21 Hoop Tales: Build (Mikal) Bridges, Not Walls Edition

Case Study: Mikal Bridges is one of the best defenders in the NBA - Bright Side Of The Sun

Thursday: 2-2 (-0.09 units)

Season: 15-21 (-8.14 units)

First Pick: Mikal Bridges O11.5 pts vs DET (-125)

Fact #1: The Pistons allow 25.9 PPG to the small forward position this season.

Fact #2: Bridges has totaled 12+ points in five of his last six contests.

Second Pick: Zion Williamson O22.5 pts vs CHA (-130)

Fact #1: Zion has outings of 24 and 29 over his past two contests.

Fact #2: The Hornets allow an average of 25 PPG to the power forward position.

Third Pick: Bucks -6 spread vs UTA (-110)

Fact #1: Third game in four nights for Utah and they have looked bad on this road trip.

Fact #2: The Bucks are averaging 127 points per game over their last three, meanwhile the Jazz have only cracked 110 once over their last five contests.

Fourth Pick: Cole Anthony O14.5 pts vs HOU (-110)

Fact #1: Markelle Fultz is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Fact #2: Anthony reportedly won’t play Fultz-like minutes, but he shouldn’t need to do so to hit this number.

Fact #3: The Rockets allow 27.8 PPG to point guards this season.

1.4.21 Hoop Tales: Chef Curry is Back, so Let’s Take Advantage Edition

Sunday: 3-0… FINALLY! (+2.58 units)

Season: 11-15 (-5.66 units)

Recap: We hope Kevin Durant is okay and his over prop wins will be waiting when he gets back.

First Pick: 7:10 PM Sixers -2.5 1st quarter vs Hornets (-117)

The Logic: This is the third game in four nights for the Hornets. Yes, I know they played Philly on Saturday, but Philly ran them amuck in the first quarter and I’d expect another fast start given how the Sixers are playing right now.

Second Pick: 10:10 PM De’Aaron Fox O22.5 points vs Warriors (-134)

Fact #1: Fox has hit this mark in two of his last three and four and three of four overall.

Fact #2: Now that Chef Curry is back (62 points last night), he’ll be expending a lot of energy on offense to continue showing everyone that he takes the slander personally.

Fact #3: Most importantly, the Warriors are allowing the second-most points per game to the PG position at 31.1.

Third Pick: 8:10 PM Donte DiVincenzo O11.5 points vs Pistons (+100)

Fact #1: The Pistons allow an average of 27.1 points per contest to the 2-guard position this season.

Fact #2: Donte has 12+ points in four of six games this season. Said another way, he has hit this number in games where his team wasn’t involved in a blowout.

1.1.21 Hoop Tales: So Many Games (10), It feels like a Holiday Buffet Edition

Do the Cavaliers Hit a Midseason Wall? | Inside the NBA | NBA on TNT - YouTube
With so many tasty matchups on the slate, I felt compelled to sample a lot of the action.

Thursday: 1-2 (-1.17 units)

Season: 5-9 (-4.75 units)

Recap: JaVale McGee was unleashed to the tune of 1-for-9 shooting in the first quarter — that’s all you need to know about how Cavs +2.5 1st quarter went. Darius Garland came through on his point total, while I underestimated how not ready the Thunder are with their current roster.

First Pick: Hawks Team Total O119.5 vs BKN (-117)

Fact #1: The first meeting on Wednesday saw these two teams combine for 286, which went well over the closing O/U of 240.5.

Fact #2: The Hawks have eclipsed 120 points in every game following their season-opening total of 117.

Fact #3: Even with Brooklyn adjustments to the slip screens, the pace of this game should be very Big 12 football-like again.

Second Pick: Kevin Durant O27.5 points vs ATL (-110)

Fact #1: Durant has reached 28+ points three of his four games this season, including 33 against the Hawks on Wednesday.

Third Pick: Celtics -5 1st Half spread vs DET

Fact #1: Boston is 5-0 ATS in the first half this season, while Detroit is 2-2

Fact #2: Although it’s not in-his-prime Blake Griffin, he’s still a solid contributor, but he be out tonight as he continues to go through concussion protocol.

Fourth Pick: Clippers -1.5 1st Half spread vs UTA (-117)

Fact #1: The Clippers are 4-1 ATS in the first half this season compared to the Jazz who are 2-2

Fact #2: The lone loss ATS in the first half was that drubbing at the hands of the Mavs when Kawhi didn’t play

Fact #3: The Jazz played last night — granted at home — while the Clippers were resting in Utah. If PG13 and The Claw are playing, the Clippers should wear them down early.

Fifth Pick: Gordon Hayward O.18.5 points vs MEM (+101)

Fact #1: If you believe in trends like I do, then you’ll appreciate that Hayward’s point totals have been the following through four games: 28 — 12 — 28 — 11… which should the trend continue, indicates a good game on the horizon.

Fact #2: But let’s support that “outlandish claim” with supporting evidence: The Grizzlies are allowing a league-high 32.8 points per contest to the small forward position early on this season, including a 42-point thrashing at the hands Jaylen Brown just the other day.

Sixth and Seventh Picks: Donte DiVincenzo O11.5 points (-110) and O1.5 Made 3Pters (-134) vs CHI

Fact #1: DiVincenzo has hit at least three 3’s in four of five games and the fifth game featured two makes.

Fact #2: He has also scored 13+ points in four of five contests with the outlier game being a 10-point effort in Milwaukee’s uncharacteristic blowout at the hands of the Knicks (same game with only two made 3s.

Fact #3: The Bulls are allowing an average of 26 points per game to the 2-guard position early on this season.

12.27.20 Hoop Tales: A (James) Wiseman Once Told Me Edition

Hornets, Warriors reportedly 'covet' Wiseman | Yardbarker

Christmas: 1-1

Season 3-3 (-.41 units)

Recap: I’ve already found a trend that I don’t like: the 3 props I’ve incorrectly picked were the result of the player’s team playing too well. On Christmas, Jrue Holiday and company had no reason to play the 4th quarter, ending at 12 points in 25 minutes. It happened on Opening Night with Joe Harris and Kawhi Leonard, too. If only I could predict the potential blowout…

First Pick: James Wiseman O12.5 Pts vs CHI (-134)

Fact #1: The Bulls are allowing 23.5 points per game to the Center position early on.

Fact #2: Wiseman broke out the 3-point shot on Christmas, which is only going to give him more shot opportunities.

Fact #3: Wiseman has posted 19 and 18 points, respectively in his first two games against Brooklyn and Milwaukee, which feature better defensive big men than Chicago.

Fact #4: Draymond Green remains out, which just gives Wiseman more looks in Golden State’s offensive sets.

Second Pick: Kyrie Irving O2.5 Made 3Pters vs CHA (-120)

Fact #1: Irving has posted 3-pt made totals of 4 (vs GSW) and 7 (vs BOS) through two games.

Fact #2: There are no other facts. Brooklyn has the spacing right now to get any shot they want and we should ride the waves until given a reason not to.

Third Pick is a 5-pt Teaser: Nets -5.5/Bucks -7.5 (-104)

Fact #1: Both teams are catching their opponents on the second half of back-to-back sets. The Hornets lost a last-second shot against the Thunder, while the Knicks were beat by the Sixers.

Fact #2: Both of these teams have put up big point totals to start (124.0 per game an 129.5, respectively). Not having the freshest of legs, I don’t see neither the Hornets, nor the Knicks keeping up by the time this game reaches the 4th quarter.

Quick Celtics Thoughts After First Weekend of Preseason Action Against the Charlotte Hornets

Image result for celtics gordon hayward

Well, Sunday was a great day in Boston. For the first time in a long time, the Celtics, Patriots, AND Red Sox were all victorious on the same day.

Sure, the Pats victory was the only one that mattered, as the Celtics are only playing preseason ball at the moment and the Sox already locked up their spot in the postseason what feels like eons ago. But October is officially here, which is the one month per year we get all four of our beloved squads playing meaningful action at the same time. The Pats, Celts, and Bruins are either already in or about to be in the fresh, young stages of the season, and the Sox are getting set for another World Series run.

What a time to be alive in the Bean!

This piece is going to focus on the Green, though, after a 1-1 series split with the Charlotte Hornets this past weekend. Rather than break down each game, let’s instead take a look at a few key takeaways:

Mixed Results for Hayward

If you were to look solely at Gordon Hayward’s stat line from the weekend, you might think things didn’t really go so hot for him: 3-of-14 from the field overall; 1-of-7 from deep; seven rebounds; and four assists.

Image result for gordon hayward hornets

Sure, those shooting numbers are pretty rough, but he did have seven rebounds and four assists in 44 total minutes of action. Also, it was the first two games the guy has played in since October 17 of last year; he’s still shaking off the rust.

Hayward even admitted as much after Friday night’s contest (h/t ESPN Boston):

“The one cut to the rim, I usually would have dunked that one. Tried to go up off my leg and just didn’t have it, I guess,” Hayward said. “So, that stuff I think will come back, that little explosion. I’m certain of that. … It was just the speed of the game, just the crowd, that’s something I need to get used to again.”

Now, I’m not going to lie, the whole “tried to go up off my leg and just didn’t have it” part of that quote didn’t leave me with the warm and fuzzies, but I’m hoping it really is just a muscle memory sort of thing as opposed to any residual physical limitation.

Regardless of how mediocre his play might have been this weekend, all that matters is Hayward got through the first two games without issue. That’s all we can ask for at this point.

Morris Looks Ready to Go

Image result for marcus morris

After serving as one of the very best bench pieces in the entire NBA last season, Marcus Morris looks rearing to go in 2018. Morris finished the weekend with 24 total points in 35 minutes of action on 9-of-21 shooting from the floor overall, including 46 percent from three-point land.

However, the most impressive numbers associated with Morris were actually his plus-6 and plus-11 finishes, respectively. Morris’s toughness and relentless energy permeate throughout the rest of his teammates each time he is on the floor, on BOTH ends, and efficiency numbers like this only further prove that point.

Easily talented enough to be a starter on most teams throughout the Association, Morris is content to serve as one the Green’s most important reserves on a loaded roster. After coming up with the nickname “BWA” (Bench With Attitude) for he and the rest of the team’s reserves this season, Morris doubled down on the moniker with a clear message for the rest of the league just a few days ago:

We may still be two weeks away from regular-season action, but Morris is already chomping at the bit. LFG!

Bob Gets Some Praise

Image result for robert williams celtics

I’m proud of you, Bob!

Not only did Robert Williams finish the weekend with eight points and three boards in 20 minutes on the floor, but it was his key block that sealed the victory over the Hornets on Sunday night.

The “block” was actually an even more impressive tip on a three-point attempt from Charlotte’s Malik Monk, which, were it to go in, would have given the Hornets a two-point lead with about 15-ish seconds left to play. However, Williams was able to use his huge wingspan and quickness to get out to the perimeter just in time, forcing Monk’s shot completely off course:

But, as pointed out by fellow teammate Kyrie Irving, it was Williams’s actions after the block that truly stood out to him: After Monk’s missed shot attempt landed in the hands of Celtics rookie Brad Wanamaker, Williams was passed the ball and had an easy lane toward the basket. However, rather than try and continue to show off after an impressive swat, he simply passed the ball to Guerschon Yabusele, who laid in the dagger for the win. He chose the easy basket over the flashy play, which is a decision that flies right in the face of those who continue to worry about his “maturity” issues.

Said Irving after the game (h/t Celtics.com):

“Those little things right there show you how well he fits in the mold of being a Boston Celtic,” said Kyrie Irving, who scored a team-high 20 points. “He makes the huge play and then passes to Guersch when he could’ve easily wind-milled or done something crazy for the crowd. But he passes to Guersch, we seal the game, and I know that felt good for him and for the rest of us.”

Nice work, kid! Keep it up!

Besides those three takeaways, it was a solid overall weekend for the C’s. While they didn’t come without each of their own struggles at times, each and every one of the starters also looked terrific at points this weekend. There truly wasn’t one thing that stood out to me as a concern going forward. Yes, it’s only October 1, and yes, we’re only through two preseason games. But it was a good start for the Green this weekend.

The next preseason game for the C’s is on Tuesday night at home against the now-LeBron-less Cleveland Cavaliers.
