Jerry Jeudy Had a Real Curb Your Enthusiasm Moment at the NFL Combine

NY Post – Jerry Jeudy was a five-star recruit coming out of Deerfield Beach, Fla., but that does not explain why he proudly and boldly wears a gold six-pointed Star of David around his neck.

Jeudy sported the necklace Tuesday as he took the podium at the NFL Combine, with the Jewish star on full display. Jeudy got the idea after hearing how many people shorten his last name when they referred to him.

“People call me ‘Jew’ for short,” he explained. That prompted him to get the Jewish star, which he wore while playing at Alabama.

“I’m not Jewish, though,” he said.

So this happened at the NFL Combine last week, but I never got a chance to blog it and I couldn’t let the story pass without touching on it. The Alabama product is the top rated wide receiver and is projected to go in the first handful of picks in the draft so this became a headline. Now I don’t watch a ton of Bama games so I have no idea if this nickname is a long time thing or not, but Jeudy was rocking a blinged out Star of David necklace at his combine press conference. Plenty of athletes have diamond encrusted Jesus pieces so this is no different. Except Jeudy isn’t actually Jewish. Nope, he said he wears the chain because his nickname is “Jew/Jeu.” Predictably Jeudy had to apologize on twitter for potentially offending anyone, but when I heard this I was howling. This is an episode synopsis right out of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

“Larry’s long suffering football team the New York Jets drafts Jerry Jeudy, but when Larry learns of the receiver’s Star of David necklace he must decide between his religion and his football team.”

Was Kyler Murray Wearing George Costanza’s Boots to Appear Taller at the NFL Combine?

Because my brain is a useless amalgam of rap lyrics from the early 2000s and pop culture references, the first thing that popped into my brain after seeing this tweet was George Costanza’s Timberland boots. Clearly Kyler Murray took a page out of old Georgey’s book if this is true. Maybe Kyler met Kliff Kingsbury while he was wearing some Timberland boots in the cold Indianapolis weather and was now worried about not seeing eye to eye with his potential future coach. If this is in fact true I am totally fine with it because thats exactly the kind of gutsy, resourceful type of guy I want leading my team.

Coming Out of the Combine, Joey B and Mattes Discuss the 2019 NFL Draft

Blogger’s Note: The 2019 NFL Draft Combine ended earlier this week after a grueling four days where players were made to wear spandex while running, lifting, jumping, being asked if they had both nuts, and doing positional drills. Now we’ve been given the yearly transparency into how these players stack up side by side, from a raw athleticism point of view. With that in mind I kicked off a little electronic mail with Mattes, my fellow draft nerd, about this year’s class and what it could mean for the Pats.

Joey B:

Hey Mattes,

So the combine is all over and apart from the Pro days the stage is set for the draft. What are your thoughts coming out of the “underwear olympics” and of this draft class?

Mattes:

I’mma let Maverick sum this one up for me:

Will NFL Sudden Death Finally Receive a Pardon?

Three things are guaranteed in life: death, taxes, and a team the Patriots beat in the playoffs pushing for rule changes in the offseason. Andy Reid would have been better served drawing up a defense that would have guaranteed HIS team a possession five weeks ago, but in his defense the NFL overtime rules are the worst in sports. Pure sudden death definitely had its drawbacks but at least it was simple. The fact that the NFL has to flash the overtime rules on the screen every time a game is tied with less than four minutes to go is how you know it’s too complicated for its own good.

I’m in favor of the NFL adopting the college football overtime rules. Short of that, I think I have an easy fix for the current overtime mess. Give each team the opportunity to possess the ball at least once. No questions asked. Team that had the ball first scored a TD? Cool. Now the other team gets its shot. If it’s tied after that, then go to sudden death. The team that gets the ball a second time in overtime could win on a field goal at that point, but at least the other team could’ve gone for two after scoring their touchdown.

In other rule book news, we may not see any changes to Instant Replay next year. While replay certainly helped the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs were by no means robbed the way the Saints were. Maybe we’d see changes to Instant Replay if the Patriots benefited from a (non-)call the way the Rams did. Or if Belichick didn’t support expanding it.

My first choice would be to eliminate replay all together. My second choice would be to take coach’s challenges out of the process and install a neutral observer in the press box. to handle all replays. If we’re going to keep the system the way it is right now, though, why not allow coaches to challenge everything? Pandora’s box has already opened.

John Harbaugh made some great points on this topic earlier this week. Watching football at field level is tough. Oftentimes fans in the crowd and fans at home have a better view of the play, in real time, than the on-field official. Why not use all the technology available to make sure the game is officiated properly and fairly?

Whatever happens, at least credit the NFL for being the league most willing to continually tweak its product and give the fans what they want.

Former NFL Combine Athletic Freaks Julio Jones and Devin Hester Take Exception to NFL Hyping Up Saquon Barkley’s Athletic Freak Combine Performance. Huh?

USA Today -As expected, Saquon Barkley put on a show at the 2018 NFL combine. His performance inspired NFL Media’s research department to send out this tweet… That didn’t sit well with Hester, who took to Instagram to point out that he was not 100% when he ran in Indy

“No disrespect to S Barkley But I ran in the combine with a pulled hamstring with sneakers on, just so I wouldn’t make it any worse. Was told by all the scouts that if I did bad that I could make it up at pro day. @nfl@nflnetwork@NFLResearch do you really think he was faster then me!!!!😂😂😂😂”

Julio Jones’ reaction wasn’t so polite

“They got me f#%* up! I’m 4.3 with a broken foot”

Jones was diagnosed with a broken foot immediately following his combine performance in 2011. But we should point out that NFL Research did not even mention Jones’ speed in the comparison. Joe Thomas could only laugh at the tweet…

For guys that were literally Pro Bowlers in the National Football League to freak out that the NFL is hyping up this rookie is preposterous. Be more insecure guys. Oh I ran with a bad hammy, oh I had a bum foot that day.

I’m the first guy to yell from the mountaintops that NFL Combine performance doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot when projecting successful NFL players. Remember Vernon Gholston?

How often does a player run 40 yards completely straight without interruption? The answer is basically never. So a lot of these drills aren’t super relevant, but that doesn’t mean its not goddamn impressive. Just look at this tweet.

He ran a faster 40 than Devin Hester, put up more reps on the bench than Joe Thomas (a Left TACKLE) and he had a higher Vertical than arguably the most athletic player in the NFL in Julio Jones. Does that mean he will be a better NFL player than any of those guys? Of course not, but let me repeat myself, its still goddamn impressive. So for these guys to come out of the woodworks to bitch and moan?

The NFL Combine is Now Open to the Public and I Need to Go

richeisennflcombine

Yahoo – The NFL reportedly is opening the doors to the NFL combine to fans to get a look behind the curtain at how the biggest pre-draft event works. But the question we have: Once they see it, will they ever want to again? The league is allowing 6,000 fans to witness events such as the 40-yard dash and the bench press, along with prospect interviews, for the combine, which runs March 2-5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

YES. Yes I want to go see this. Are you kidding me? Get a chance to see the Westminster Dog Show in person, count me in. All kidding aside this could make for a long day, but what better way to legitimately understand what freaks of nature these athletes are than seeing them workout in person.

It also seems like the perfect opportunity to take your shithead friend who played D2 football and still things he has a shot at the League. Witness a dude bench 222 lbs 30 times or run a 4.3 40-yard dash as a 6’2″ freak of nature. Now that is some shit that would be entertaining.

Or who knows, maybe you hit the jackpot and get to witness greatness:

But seriously count me in. Any bullshit sporting event I am always in. Arena Football, UFL (Daunte Culpepper shredded it up in Hartford), NLL Lacrosse inside a CASINO, the list goes on and on.

Still my biggest regret in life though was being too young to fly out for an NFL Europa game and see Rohan Davey rip 70 yard throws in Berlin.
