The UFC is On ABC Today and That’s a Big Deal

So the UFC usually kicks off every year with a string of really big cards, or to be more accurate, a series of huge main events.

Believe it or not the whole quarantine thing kind of feeds into the next few UFC events because they are designed to feel like a series. it’s almost like a festival: three main stages, three huge acts over a week’s time.

In terms of that stage, the UFC has their whole island in Abu Dhabi. They’ve literally established their own Island to hold fights. As a fan who can complain?

Anyway today we have Max Holloway against Calvin Kattar. Calvin has been told with a win against Max Holloway he gets a title shot. That makes total sense considering he’s been steadily climbing up the leaderboard while knocking people out. Max is in an odd spot because he is now 0/2 against the current champion. He is not guaranteed a title shot despite possibly being the greatest featherweight of all time. The fight game, amirite?

What is wild about all of this build up surrounding the fight is that NONE OF IT MATTERS. Why? Well what matters is that this card is on ABC. The UFC will be on basic television, an insane moment in combat sports history. This is not the first time MMA has been on basic tv, but this feels different. Due to the UFC’s ESPN deal suddenly they get to televise their broadcast on a regular channel in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday. That’s a big deal. that’s not hiding on a broadcast channel on a Saturday when no one’s looking. This is different. MMA has kind of made it.

As an aside- in case you want a prediction from The 300s, you know I want to pick MA’s Calvin Kattar. But I consider Max Holloway the greatest FW of all time. He’ll win a 5 round decision.

#RushHourRap – Chris Webby – Raising The Bar

True story: Back in college I used to work at The Gap where I developed my bulletproof method of folding t-shirts and crisply stacked denim. But because I was absolutely broke I would work whatever shift I could get so sometimes that was the mid-afternoon shift working the register and folding reasonably priced sweaters. Other times it was the 4 AM shift unloading the truck and opening up all the new products. And since I was one of the only guys that worked there, this included taking the 100 pounds of cardboard through the back hallways of the mall, down the sketchy service elevator, and into the belly of the South Shore Plaza to crush it all up in the dumpster. Real great job for like $9 an hour. Anyways, I paint this picture so you can understand how any form of entertainment was greatly needed. Now the No. 1 perk of working these absurdly early morning shifts was the fact that the mall was obviously not open yet so we could listen to our own music in the store. Well being like 19-years-old provides a certain level of the chemical “fuck it” in your system so when the middle aged ladies would bring out the radio to play some Matty in the Morning, I would snatch the Aux cord and BLAST obscure rap like Chris Webby at 5 in the morning. Now just picture me, unpacking boxes before the sun was even up, playing rap at a deafening level inside a dimly lit Gap just to get through the morning.

Bill Belichick Sidesteps PR Disaster and Declines Medal of Freedom from President Trump

Bill Belichick is a well known military historian after growing up in Annapolis where his veteran father was an assistant football coach at Navy for 30 years, who just turned down the nation’s highest civilian honor from the Commander in Chief. This is not a garden variety accolade, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award for “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” So for Belichick to decline the Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States is not something he took lightly.

After the shit show that was last week at the Capitol it would have been utterly impossible for Belichick to accept this award from the man who has become politically radioactive. Not to mention all the heat Bill has taken over the last few years for his friendship (and endorsement letter) with Donald Trump. After what we’ve seen in the last week along with the fierce opposition from NFL players who have publicly railed against the President the last four years, the blowback Belichick would have faced would have been immense.

Now you can argue that this is all bullshit and Belichick got bullied into declining the award, but it brings to mind something I always say to my own team: perception is reality. You can have the best of intentions (or not), you can think you’re in the right, but you need to be mindful of perception. The Patriots are coming off their worst season in 20 years, the United States Capitol was just stormed for the first time in 100+ years after the President whipped people into a frenzy, and the man that would be personally handing this award to Belichick just became the first President in the history of the United States to be impeached twice. Even the dumbest person in the room knows you don’t want to be associated with somebody accused of inciting an insurrection.

Yahoo’s Charles Robinson thinks the decision was more personal than business for Belichick.

“The league has been largely living inside its own bubble the past week where it concerns Trump, a bubble that was forged by past events and whose ideology is it’s better to ignore the things Trump says and does than to engage.

All of that makes what Belichick just did feel more personal. He could have accepted Trump’s honor as an outright show of support, or simply because Belichick doesn’t like to be told what he should be doing. Also because he could have simply said “no” without context. If anything, it’s more unprecedented for Belichick to explain himself. So the fact that he did so suggests he knows the gravity of the moment.

What Belichick said sounded personal to him, particularly his reminder that he is speaking as “an American citizen.” That sounds like someone who is making a clear prioritization. Yes, he wrote a letter to Trump in support of his presidential run in 2016. Yes, they previously had a long friendship that Trump likes to drop into conversations from time to time. But Belichick is complicated. He also has an appreciation of American history and a steeped family history in the military. And while he doesn’t engage politically very often in public, those who have known him for a long time suggest he’s as thoughtful about the foundational elements of democracy as he is about football.”

So maybe it was a come to Jesus moment for Belichick and he is now questioning his relationship with Trump or maybe it’s just an infamously shrewd strategic mind in Belichick reading the room and sidestepping what would have been an inevitable PR shit storm. Either way he deserves credit for putting the team before any personal accolades and not only declining the award, but going against his modus operandi and providing a detailed explanation as to why he made the decision.

Woman Clings to Hood of Speeding Car to Stop Couple From Stealing Puppy

Click2Houston – A frightening scene on a Houston highway. A woman clung to the hood of a speeding car while trying to get back a stolen puppy. Police said they are now searching for one of two suspects they believe was involved after an arrest was made Tuesday…James said on Nov. 4, a couple came into her store to look at different breeds of dogs. They decided to buy a $10,000 exotic bully, according to James. Then as she went upstairs to grab paperwork for a nearby UPS driver, the couple left the store, the woman had the dog in her arms.

Surveillance cameras caught the couple leaving.

Then James bolted after them. She said her only concern was the 7-month-old bully, who just had surgery days earlier and needed special medication.

“My mind is focused on her health, I obviously didn’t care about my wellbeing,” James said.

She chased the couple to their car. James said she demanded they give the dog back, instead, they hit her with the car, then threatened to run her over.

“Next time I heard the gas go, he went very aggressively and it (the bumper) kind of like slapped me on top of the car,” James said.

She clung to the car as they sped throughout the area.

This young lady can drink from my canteen any day. You have to watch the video to understand how crazy this scene really was. This wasn’t even her dog! She just worked at the pet store that this scumbag couple decided to rob.

Everybody bitches about their job, complaining about the horrible working conditions AKA your apartment. Meanwhile this woman is narrowly escaping death in the middle of her shift and laughing it off with Channel 2 later that week. I imagine her as Dante in Clerks when all this shit goes down and she’s on the hood of the car bombing down the highway just thinking to herself how she got into this situation.

The crazy thing is, I think every dog owner can relate to this situation. You better believe I’m jumping on the hood of that car if it’s my pup someone tries to snatch. I’ll throw hands with a nun if she’s trying to take my dog. This woman essentially turned into the T-1000 from Terminator 2 when these two dognappers tried to make away with the pup.

You can run, you can fight, but you ain’t getting this dog without adding Assault With a Deadly Weapon to your rap sheet. So for that I tip my cap to this pet store employee. Hopefully the owner gives this girl a raise for laying her life on the line for a part-time job.

PS – Don’t spend $10,000 on a puppy. There are tons of dogs you can rescue and adopt for 1/20th of that cost while saving a dog’s life and at the same time not supporting puppy mills.

Ken Jennings Opened His First Jeopardy Episode as Host With a Tear Jerking Alex Trebek Tribute

My tears weren’t even dry from the Alex Trebek tribute that Jeopardy ran on Friday following Trebek’s final episode before Ken Jennings came in and made my living room supremely dusty all over again.

Below is Friday’s tribute if you missed it.

Big Z is our in house game show expert so I won’t steal his thunder for a future blog on potential host options, but this is a reminder that technically Ken Jennings is guest hosting for the time being. With the thinking being that Jeopardy will try a few different hosts to see who would be the best fit long term. Obviously they would be wise to have a swift audition period because the No. 1 thing Jeopardy had going for it was consistency. People watched Jeopardy every night, not for the questions, but for Alex Trebek. I don’t know the numbers, but I would assume The Price is Right ratings took a hit after Bob Barker retired. Or even post-Regis Philbin on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Certain hosts are synonymous with the show they host so Jeopardy would be smart to find its guy quickly.

Jennings was a solid host in his first crack at the job and if nothing else you know he’s the smartest guy in the room and a Jeopardy fanatic; two of the qualities that made Trebek such a perfect fit. Nobody will ever match his charm, but thats an impossible task to conquer so Jeopardy will continue to search for the next best guy. Who knows, maybe Anderson Cooper is over politics after the last four years and after years of interest, Sony Pictures can finally lure the Silver Fox over to the game show!

In an impossible position, Jennings showed just how much Alex Trebek meant not just to fans across the country, but to himself personally. It was a touching tribute, one that perfectly read the room, and helped ease the transition to the next Jeopardy host.

So The Capitol Was Stormed Yesterday

GIGANTIC DISCLAIMER: When I was in high school the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were raging and people my age were getting hardcore involved in politics left and right. I swore I wouldn’t get involved then because what the fuck did we know at 15? I contend I was right then. As I got older I swore I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever get involved with politics because I contended, and still do to a point, that it’s just made up of adults arguing like children and insulting each other and is just a fucking crock of shit. I also contend that is, to an extend, still true. But I just can’t not say anything anymore. After 31 years this is my breaking point.

Generally speaking, as a policy Red put in place and held up by tastes of the bloggers themselves, politics is not the forte of The 300s. There are smarter, more concisely educated people that can talk about the state of things better than we can, for the most part. But the events of yesterday kind of warrants some sort of reaction from just about everyone with a keyboard. Silence at this point is deafening.

Yesterday a large group or “mob” of enraged Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building. Possibly the most defining symbol of our nation and what it stands for – freedom, democracy, free speech, and at the most basic level an organized way of doing things – was swarmed and beset upon by these maniacs. They did so on the ground that this whole past election was a lie. That the sitting president could not be removed from office via “fraud.” Rationality be damned, despite the Republican VP and the Republican House Majority Leader having conceded that the election was legit, hence why they showed the fuck up to make this thing official, they the people were going to do whatever it was that was necessary to not let that hearing take place. And it resulted in a deadly, disgusting display of entitlement and moral vacancy. Now, it’s important, I think, to identify who these people were, in their hearts of hearts.

1.) Most if not all represent a group of people who are violently racist. A set of gallows was set up on the Capitol steps and two of these jackasses reenacted the murder of George Floyd on the front steps.
2.) They most likely are unemployed as it was early afternoon on a Tuesday when they decided to attack.
3.) They effuse completely unproven, false conspiracy theories that basically state a secret, shadow group of business and political leaders are trying to bring down Trump.
4.) They committed treasonous, seditious acts against the federal government and should be persecuted as such.

Now note a few things about those four points. Firstly, I didn’t really insert my political beliefs, did I? I said nothing about conservatives vs. liberals, left vs. right blah blah. Nope. Because fuck all that. This was a group of angry, violent dickheads who decided to attack our nation’s capital that’s it. I also didn’t call them terrorists. Which I might (probably will) take some heat for. To do so would not be exactly accurate and quite frankly it’s giving them too much credit. They pussied out from becoming terrorists. Terrorists would have rolled in with some C4 and a few AK’s and started lighting shit up. (Although there were reports of a couple pipe bombs being found so this could have been even worse than it was) The crew of Paul Blarts apparently guarding the Capitol would have been even more helpless to stop them. No, these were just racist, pathetic, vandals. They were vandals who are just so pathetically (I’ll use that word as much as I want) pissed off that they only have two weeks left to be told they matter. Which brings me to my next point.

The reason these kinds of assholes have become not just ubiquitous but completely open about who they are over the last, O I don’t know, four years is because Donald Trump told them that everything they do matters. It’s making a difference! You are right in what you feel and should act on it! You’re on the right side! You see, before this regime these people had these sad, pathetic, nothingness lives (and still do) with no purpose except to suck some oxygen out of the world. And that must have sucked. And they were rightfully angry about how bleak their existence was. Then they woke up one day and had somewhere to channel all of this resentment (that they brought on themselves) and in an echo chamber were given people (black people to be specific), places, and things to hate and new ideas about how lizard people and Al Gore was conspiring against their new leader with the owner of a pizzeria (or some shit like that idk man I don’t read that shit). That’s really who attacked our freedom, which is what happened: A giant mob of low-lives who were so desperate to hang on to the one, tiny, FAKE piece of purpose they’ve ever had. The ultimate McGuffin. “All your rage is fueling our country” was the lie they’d believed and now it’s coming to an end.

The absolutely eye fucking rolling part of this is no matter how many MAGA twitter accounts, people identifying themselves as much on the news, etc. as there were you STILL HAVE PEOPLE SAYING IT WAS A HOAX. You still have people saying it was Antifa, the wolves in hick clothing. Fucking wild. You had half the far right cheering these people on and half of them denying it was their buddies to begin with. Talk about not knowing about the prisoner’s dilemma. Did they forget to suss out in the group chat what the party fucking line was supposed to be?

So, damn you people, go back to your shanties. But first, go to federal fucking prison. I don’t know why you weren’t maced, beaten, and immediately thrown in jail like some other protestors I heard about. But I’ll try and keep this as down the middle as I can. Because again that is what this blog is about. That you are a gigantic piece of shit if you try and disrupt our democratic process. I again repeat:

You are a gigantic piece of shit if you try and disrupt our democratic process.

I could write another 2,000 words on the abject horror the black community felt watching this take place and seeing these (mostly) white protestors getting (mostly) shepherded peacefully out of the hall of our nation’s fucking government, but honestly I don’t feel like I’m the right guy for the job. I’ll just say that it’s bullshit.

One last time: You are a gigantic piece of shit if you try and disrupt our democratic process.

God Bless America, let’s figure it the fuck out,
-Joe

1.5.21 Hoop Tales: We’ve Been Expecting You, Mr. (Kyle) Anderson Edition

Memphis Grizzlies 2019-2020 Player Previews: Kyle Anderson - Grizzly Bear Blues

Monday: 1-2 (-1.15 units)

Season: 12-17 (-6.81 units)

Recap: The Sixers look great and continue to be a strong 1st quarter spread play. The Bucks scored 125 points and it felt like Giannis scored all of them instead of DiVincenzo. Fox finished 5 points shy of his over and the Kings getting blown out early did us no favors.

First Pick: Kyle Anderson O13.5 pts vs LAK (-118)

Fact #1: Anderson is averaging 18.6 PPG over his last five contests, including 18+ in four of those outings.

Fact #2: In the first game of this series, he totaled 18 on a season-high 19 shots, despite going 1-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Fact #3: The Lakers allow an average of 26 PPG to the small forward position.

Second Pick: Kyrie Irving O27.5 pts vs UTA (-132)

Fact #1: Durant (health and safety protocols) is out tonight, missing his second game of the young season.

Fact #2: There’s an average of 17.5 shots per game up for grabs this evening.

Fact #3: In his first 10 games in BK last season without Durant, Irving averaged 28 PPG and I would expect a similar full-game effort tonight.

That 2nd pick was TLC until I saw he wasn’t starting tonight.

Third Pick: Nikola Jokić U24.5 pts vs MIN (-120)

Fact #1: Joker is leading the league in assists per game at 12.8, which shows he’s focused more on doing more in the offense than just scoring.

Fact #2: Joker has scored 25+ against the Kings twice this season and is 0-4 at that number against everyone else, including a 19-point triple-double effort in the first game of this 2-game series.

Fourth Pick: Clippers -2.5 1st quarter spread vs SAS (-118)

Fifth and Sixth Picks: Paul George O3.5 Made 3Pters (-134) and O24.5 points (-110) vs SAS

PG has been ruled out tonight with an ankle injury, so I’m not playing Clippers -3 1dt quarter spread anymore.
